Abstract

5-year-survival rates for malignant melanomas occurring in the oral cavity are very low compared with the typical melanomas occurring on the skin's surface. This is most likely due to difficulty in early detection of tumors orising in the oral cavity and in performing extensive radical surgery in the maxillofacial region.A malignant melanoma treated succcessfully with DAV chemotherapy and administration of high dose interferon-β is reported. Before operation, a single cycle of DAV chemotherapy and local administration of interferon-β(1, 800×104 IU) were carried out. The tumor in the oral lesion was resected and total neck dissection was perfomed. Postopelatively, double cycles of DAV chemotherapy and systemic administration of high dose interferon-β(total 15, 100×104 IU) were carried out.In the three years that have passed since the first treatment, neither local recurrence nor distant metastasis have been detected clinically. However, it is important to continue follow-up because clinic statistics indicate that malignant melanoma has a high recurrence rate.
