Abstract

The article examines spiritual verses on evangelic stories describing episodes from Christ’s and the Blessed Virgin’s earthly life and widespread in the manuscript tradition of upper Vychegda peasants - Old Believers at the end of the XIX - the beginning of the XX century. These texts written in Komi are translations from the Russian sources and indicate the Komi scribers’ interest in apocryphal texts, which described certain biblical events in more detail than canonical texts. The popular belief in the intercession of Christ and the Holy Virgin, the key figures of Christian religious doctrine, was based not only on the conceptions of the Savior’s mission - his feat, sufferings, retributive force - but tackled the theme of mercy, mostly associated with the Blessed Virgin’s image.
