Abstract

The aim of this research is to verify the attribution of Musnad zaīd to zaīd ibn Ali by examining the chain of narration and the book's popularity in the academic community from his era to the present time. Looking at the chain of transmission, an exclusivity was found, which continued for twelve generations after zaīd ibn Ali. It is a severe uniqueness that is not common to happen to famous books, with its inclusion of some fabricators. As far as the popularity of the book among scholars is concerned, it was found that from the third to the sixth century AH neither Zaid's close relatives nor the most well-known Zaidi imams who attempted to emulate his doctrine were aware of its existence until Jaʿfar bin aḥmad al-bahlūli announced its unique existence and chain of transmission. Therefore, it has been concluded by this study that this book was not written or narrated by zaīd ibn Ali due to technical faults in the chain of narrators.
