Abstract

Changes in pure-tone thresholds before and after stapes surgery were investigated in 50 otosclerosis ears. The characteristics of the pure-tone threshold were studied in Japanese patients with otosclerosis. The average air conduction audiogram showed a stiffness curve which was not observed in the reports from Europe and the United States. This stiffness curve may be one of the characteristics of otosclerosis in the Japanese. The average bone conduction in the present study exhibited Carhart's notch; this was also noted by European and American investigators. The time courses of hearing improvement in air conduction thresholds and the values of air-bone gaps in our study did not differ from those noted in the reports from Europe and the United States.
