Abstract

The objective of this article is to examine the transformations in dwellings and relics in Hoseo area based on data spanning from the 2nd century to the Ungjin period. Residential areas in the Hoseo region have a lack of historical data dating back to the third century. However, relics from the 2nd century were excavated from the Miho River to identify the characteristics of residential structures during that period. It was discovered that the residential structure, and Byeokju-style, which was recognized by the influence of Hansung Baekje, was found to have been a re-intellectual residential culture.
Clay + stone furnaces and handicrafts have been in use since the mid-fourth century. This shows that it is possible to distinguish between Mahan and Baekje's residential culture by analyzing relics rather than the internal structure of the residential site, and at the same time, furnaces may be more related to rich culture like Byeokju-style. However, in some areas during the same period, residential forms that combine local four-column and external Yeo-cheol's CHARACTER SHAPED DWELLING were identified, which can be seen as the result of Mahan forces' acceptance of Baekje's residential culture before the mid-4th century. Since the mid-4th century, the number of the rectangular dwellings and Yeo-cheol's Character Shaped Dwelling where clay + stone and Baekje earthenware are identified has gradually increased, and at the same time, common-sense building sites such as general ground buildings and compartmental houses have also increased. This can be understood as a change in residential culture caused by moving from the central village of Mahan to the central village related to Baekje, and at the same time, it was also linked to the background of Ungjincheondo.
From the relics, the appearance before the lattice-patterned long-range earthenware has been observed, and it may have appeared a little earlier than previously thought. Before the mid-to-late 4th century, traces of exchanges between regions in Hoseo region or Honam region, the central region, and the Yeongnam region were observed. After that, it can be seen that Baekje and Yeongnam region were more important than exchange occurring within the Hoseo region.
