Abstract

The synthesis conditions for obtaining crystals of SAPO-5 in high purity were investigated. The starting materials used were aluminum isopropoxide, aqueous silica sol and orthophosphoric acid. Tetrapropylammonium hydroxide was used as a template. The reaction vessel used was an autoclave of stainless steel (internal volume of 200 ml, built in a Teflon vessel). The reaction was carried out in a furnace at 200°C for 72 h. The state of the SAPO-5 crystals thus obtained were investigated by the observation with scanning electron microscope (SEM) and by X-ray diffractometry. Fig.1 shows the SEM photograph of the product obtained using conditions No.4 of Table 1. Many hexagonal prismatic crystls were observed implying that SAPO-5 was generated. As seen in Table 1, crystals with high purity were obtained when the molar ratio of Al and P was kept 1: 1. Also the amount of Si must be kept less than 0.12 in mole fractions of the sum of Al, P and Si in the mixtures of starting materials.
