Abstract

The paper aims to clarify the place of discovery of an ancient Turkic sculpture presently in the collection of the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography in Tomsk State University. The relevance of the research is due to the disinformation circulating in scientific literature with regard to the artifact's original location and the name of the person who delivered it to the museum. Several publications mention that G.N. Potanin transported it “from Xinjian, perhaps, from the Chinese part of Mongol Altai” and delivered it to Tomsk university. In fact, the sculpture was brought by the head of West Siberian educational district and the director of Museum of Archaeology V.M. Florinsky in 1886 from the Semirechye Oblast, present days Kazakhstan, where it was found near the Bakhta village.
