Abstract

The hybrid turbine is mainly a Darrieus turbine. But for compensating the non-selfstarting and stall characteristics, a Savonius rotor is attached to the shaft within the closed space formed by the rotating Darrieus blades. Two rotors of the hybrid turbine interfere with each other through the air flow. For the existence of the interference, the output characteristics can not derive from simple of each rotor output. In interference, the effect of rotating Darrieus rotor to Savonius rotor is obtained as the flow velocity distribution affecting to the Savonius rotor through the calculation concerning to Strickland's simple streamtube model. On the effect of rotating Savonius rotor, they observed the flow pattern around the Savonius rotor applying the flow visualization technique on the rotor model in the water circulating open channel. By introducing some assumptions, they estimations of effective output characteristics were tried for each rotor. And the output characteristics of the hybrid turbine are derived in the form of parallel connection i.e. common speed-torque sum. The estimated output characteristics of the hybrid turbine give a good coincidence to the experimental results in the wind tunnel.
