Abstract

INTRODUCTION. Chronic pain represents an important interdisciplinary problem. A distinction should be made between primary and secondary chronic pain, which can be subdivided into oncologic and non-oncologic pain. The diagnosis of chronic pain is based on the use of assessment scales. Therapy of patients suffering from chronic pain should be based on clinical guidelines. The choice of therapy for chronic pain syndrome should be etermined by the intensity of pain and the pathogenetic characterization of pain. Opioid therapy is one of the main ethods of treatment of chronic pain in palliative care of oncologic and non-oncologic patients. CONCLUSION. Tapentadol (Palexia retard) is an effective analgesic in the therapy of chronic pain syndrome of moderate to high intensity in patients suffering from oncologic and non-oncologic pain.
