Abstract

This study deals with the effect of structural differences in English on L2 learns` language performance. It first reviews the syntactic properties of Negative Polarity Items of English and Korean and also discusses the responses produced by the participants in English simple and bi-clausal structures. English and Korean differ in terms of the licensing conditions on NPIs. The former requires that any-type NPIs be c-commanded by a negative, the latter requires that amwu-type NPIs be licensed by a negative in the same clause. Long distance licensing is permissible in English, while local licensing is required in Korean. The different licensing conditions are interesting. Therefore, this needs to be studied through some experiments. In this paper, I attempted to investigate the acquisition of English NPIs from a syntactic perspective.
