Abstract

A study was made of the synthesis of 1-ethyladamantane (Et-Ad) from adamantane (AdH)and ethylene over solid acid. Et-Ad is rearranged by the acid catalysts into 1, 3-dimethyladamantane (DMA). The typical solid acid such as silica-alumina (80: 20), was found to catalyze ethylation of AdH at 230-270°C. In the presence of hydrogen chloride, catalytic activity was found to increase (Et-A d Yield 14%). On the other hand, zeolite, exchanged with rare earth metals showed catalytic activity higher than silica-alumina in the AdH ethylation, and indicated the consecutive rearrangement of Et-Ad to DMA. t Rearrangement of Saturated Tricyclic Hydrocarbon on Bifunctional Cataly st.
