Abstract

Nippon Soda Co., Ltd. was founded in 1920. Sodium production in the company was started at the early stage of their Nihongi Plant. Previously, sodium was produced by the Castner process, however a new Downs process plant was built in 1970, and since then it has been operated successfully.Sodium has been used as raw materials for chemical products, especially tetraalkyl lead, but recently usages of sodium have been expanded widely in such fields as the production of new chemicals, titanum manufacturing by reduction of the tetrachloride and energy industries of fast breeder reactor, as a coolant of sodium-sulfur batteries and of sodium heat pipes, etc.In the future, the production of sodium is expected to grow steadily by the development of these new applications.
