Abstract

The use of mail service on the mobile phone is popular and many kinds of icons provided in the phone seem to make communications on it easier and faster. The visual, explicit characteristics of icons are likely to increase their use as an effective, simple way of expressing despite some possibilities causing misinterpretations. By conducting the questionnaires on the usage definition of the icons, we determined the semantic categories which allowed us to classify the relationships between the icons and their meanings. Specifically the reaction times to understand the relevance of matching are measured and compared after dividing icons into such categories as “superordinate”“time”“impression”“action”“internal component”“location”and “metaphor”. Based on the result that the understandability here is prescribed strongly by the semantic categories combining symbols and senses, we could find some conditions for intelligible icons.
