Abstract

The aim of the study is to determine the linguocultural potential of Russian limnonyms through the reference to the notion of “cultural code”. The author’s interest is focused on the internal form of the nomination of the “lake” vocabulary, which preserves the “cultural memory” of the Russian people. Emphasizing the onomasiological approach, the author argues that Russian limnonyms as names of natural water bodies are markers of various cultural codes. The scientific originality of the research lies in the fact that limnonyms are for the first time considered in detail as the most important marker of the natural landscape code of Russian culture. Until now, the names of the lakes have not been studied within this secondary semiological system. The results obtained showed that the main grammatical mechanisms that reveal the symbolic function of limnonyms as motivated secondary signs of the geocultural space are the processes of onimization and transonymization.
