Abstract
세조의 계유정난 이후 정계 진출에 대한 생각을 접고 방랑의 길을 선택했던 김시습. 10여 년의 방랑 생활을 청산하고 경주 남산 금오산에 은거한다. 30대 초반 시절을 보낸 금오산에서 지내던 시기에 김시습은 다수의 매화시를 창작하였다. 매화는 눈과 얼음, 추위라는 시련을 이기고 꽃망울을 터뜨려 봄을 전하는 존재이다. 봄의 전령사라는 생태적 함의와 ‘시련과 극복’이라는 이미지로 읽힌다. 이런 기본적인 함의가 김시습의 매화시에서도 나타난다. 김시습은 금오산실에 매화를 심고 미래에 대한 기대와 희망을 품었다. 그리고 매화에 지난날의 자신과 현재의 자신을 투영하였다. 지난날의 삶과 방랑에서 얻은 생각들을 정리하는 매개체가 매화였던 것이다. 또한 매화를 ‘그대’라고 인격체로 대하며 ‘探梅’ 행위를 통한 物我一體를 통해서 沒我의 경지까지 이르렀다. 그리고 그것은 자기 자신의 길에 대한 求道의 행위가 되어 내면 성찰과 관조까지 이르렀다.
