Abstract

The purpose of this study is to better understand the current state of school violence involving students with disabilities and to determine supporting measures the mitigate this violence by analyzing ‘A’ middle school teachers’ experiences. We conducted a focus group interview with five teachers that resulted in six categories and twenty sub-categories-all of these can be reduced to two broad categories. The results suggest that, first, violence of types involving students disabilities has taken place at all regardless of the time and place. We found that perpetrators often had discriminative attitudes and a low level of understanding about disabilities and school violence. Second, we found that teachers with fair and supportive attitudes are necessary to prevent school violence and to help victims recover their daily lives. In addition, we found that the intervention of teachers at initial stages, educational support to help victims‘ self-defense, and promoting a comprehensive school culture are all crucial when dealing with school violence involving students with disabilities. Lastly, we discussed various preventive measures against school violence involving students with disabilities.
