Abstract
Overseas construction market continues to grow while that of Korea suffers sluggish growth. Under the circumstances, Korean construction companies are expanding its presence in the overseas market to overcome the crisis. However, only a handful of construction conglomerates have entered into the overseas market so far. Different working and business environment, language, culture and system also pose great risks for small and medium construction firms that are relatively incompetent to enter the market abroad. Therefore, the paper suggested ways to enhance their competence and address problems they face. To this end, with focus on the small and medium construction firms that were deemed to have less overseas work experience and less competency among the local ones, it identified their issues arising from overseas projects and incompetent areas and the cause and effect of such incompetency through DEMATEL technique.
