Abstract

The aim of the paper is to identify the features of the image of the railway in the creative work of the modern poet Igor Sunerovich Melamed (1961-2014) for a more general understanding of the author’s artistic world and poetics. Igor Melamed became known as an original representative of traditionalist poetry in the 1990s. In the context of this time, he was not quite typical due to his singularity and emphasized archaism. The paper analyzes the author’s poems in which the image of the railway is found. The research is novel in that it is the first in literary studies to consider the image of the railway in the creative work of Igor Melamed. As a result of the research, it has been determined that the image of the railway in the creative work of Igor Melamed is transforming. At first, it acts as a symbol of hope for salvation in a person’s fate, brings some mystery, uncertainty into it, but gradually it is transformed into a symbol of loss, the finiteness of the life path, which somewhat contradicts the theory of N. A. Nepomnyashchikh, who noted that the image of the railway “becomes a symbol of the path to a new society and social ideal” in the XX century.
