Abstract

Objectives This study examined the mediating effect of self-compassion in the effects of internalized shame on middle school students' anger expressions. Methods For the study, data were analyzed for 221 middle school students in Seoul (119 male students and 102 female students). For the analysis, a 3-stage hierarchical regression analysis was applied to verify descriptive statistics, correlation, and mediating effect using the SPSS 22.0 program. Finally, a Sobel test was conducted to confirm the significance of the mediating effect. Results The summary of the research results is as follows. First, internalized shame and self-compassion showed a negative correlation, internalized shame and anger-out showed a positive correlation. And internalized shame and anger-in showed a positive correlation. Internalized shame and anger control showed a negative correlation. Self-compassion showed a negative correlation with anger-out and anger-in, but it had a significant positive correlation with anger control. Second, as a result of the mediating effect of self-compassion in the relationship between internalized shame and anger-out had a partial mediating effect, but anger-in had no a mediating effect. But it appears to be perfectly mediating anger control. Conclusions This study confirmed that it is important to have a self-compassion attitude in counseling. Also, in the future, it is meaningful that it is possible to provide counseling and the life guidance to teenagers having a problem of anger expressions.
