emphasises scientific research, primarily focusing on religious education at the university level. Today, according to the QS World University Rankings, it counts among the top 100 colleges worldwide for theological and religious studies. The college's interest in scientific research is apparent at the individual and institutional levels. At the individual level, faculty members at the college conduct individual research, which they publish in local and international peer-reviewed journals, amounting to around 100 peer-reviewed articles annually. They also supervise scientific projects, some of which have won funding competitions to support them. About twenty three projects of faculty members have received funding over the past five years. Similarly, graduate students at the master's or doctoral level conduct research, most of which falls under research projects for various departments in the College of Sharia and Islamic Studies or within the research priorities of Qatar University. The college's research unit oversees and guides research support, including the recently issued book "The Research Personality," (Qatar, 2023). The research unit also holds regular discussion sessions to develop scientific research and exchange ideas in this field. Among the college's institutional research achievements, it hosted the Isesco Chair for Dialogue among Civilizations, which resulted in the publication of "The Book of Wonder" in collaboration with Qatar University Press (2022). The journal of the College of Sharia and Islamic Studies at Qatar University is an essential pillar of scientific research in the college. It is the oldest research platform in the college, with a publication history of more than forty years. With the publication of its second issue of volume forty-one, the journal remains dedicated to its journey, constantly striving for growth and improvement. The editorial board has been keen on enhancing the journal's publication policies, aiming to deepen Islamic research and encourage specialised researchers to explore relevant research areas related to current topics of public concern or those relevant to Islamic studies, locally and internationally. Many scientific journals are dedicated to Islamic studies, but what sets them apart is the quality of the topics they publish on and the depth of their analyses. Our journal is committed to maintaining and ensuring these standards. Furthermore, it introduces new methodological approaches that offer a fresh perspective on previously studied subjects, revealing hitherto unexplored aspects. Considering the college and the journal's commitment to promoting and advancing Islamic studies, the journal announced this year (2023) a call for specialised research papers in Islamic or comparative studies. Specialists with relevant experience are invited to participate by submitting their research proposals for publication in the journal's regular or special issues. The journal has stipulated that the paper's topic should align with the journal's interests, specifically within the field of Islamic studies in general. It welcomes studies that address contemporary issues, offer critical insights, or provide methodological approaches to the paper's subject area. Additionally, the journal welcomes proposals related to interdisciplinary studies. The journal will review the submitted proposals and announce the winning proposal, publishing it in its next issue and referencing it on its website. Specialists will be invited to contribute to the file's topic, and their articles will jointly appear in a special issue of the journal. A scholarly seminar dedicated to the subject will conclude the cycle. This second issue of Volume 41 features six papers in Arabic and one in English by researchers from several countries. These papers address various fields of Islamic studies. For example, in his "Ibn Qutayba's Approach to Solving the Semantic Ambiguities of the Holy Qurʾān: A Morphological Approach", Nour Al-Din Al-Kharrazi (Morocco) aims to identify Ibn Qutayba's methodology in understanding the semantic ambiguities of the Holy Qurʾān, focusing on the morphological structure of its vocabulary. He concludes that Ibn Qutaybah's interpretive method can be a general model for understanding the Qurʾān. Based as they were on the conventions of Arabic as the living language in which the Qurʾān was revealed and addressed itself to mankind, Ibn Qutayba's interpretations gained wide acceptance among his fellow commentators.

The Study of Islam and Muslim Communities in Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Americas: the State of the Field
  • May 8, 2017
  • International Journal of Latin American Religions
  • Ken Chitwood

This essay offers a brief review of existent literature in the field of Islamic studies in Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Americas focusing on its main themes and suggesting some areas for further consideration and research. The essay makes theoretical suggestions for where scholars could inject their energy and efforts to advance this unfolding field of study. These theoretical considerations suggest that more work could be done in expanding the field in its engagement with prevalent theories in the field of global Islamic studies and those that treat the Americas as a geography of dynamic hemispheric engagement and encounter. Essentially, the paper argues that there is still a necessity to explore the tensions, interactions, frictions, and collaborations across and at the boundaries between the global umma and the American assabiya, between the global and the local, and between immigrant communities and the growing number of regional converts. Finally, the author suggests some practical considerations that may prove beneficial to the field’s advancement.

Islam, Environmental Science and Conservation Salah D. Hassan (bio) The 13th Annual Conference convened by the Muslim Studies Program at Michigan State University (MSU) took place on October 15 and 16, 2020 on "Islam, Environmental Science and Conservation." Initially planned as an on-campus meeting to be held in East Lansing, Michigan in April 2020, the conference was moved to a synchronous online format as a result of the COVID 19 pandemic. In order to accommodate participants in different time zones, most notably panelists located in Indonesia, the four conference sessions were held between 8:00 am and 12:00 pm over two days. Despite the many difficulties caused by the pandemic, researchers studying the environment have continued to do their important work and share knowledge in the face of the tragic global situation. Indeed, the challenge of the global health crisis has affirmed the urgency of building and maintaining connections with international students and scholars committed to expanding ecological awareness. The importance of the topics discussed was in part confirmed by the numerous papers proposed, including the participation and attendance of scholars from many universities globally. The conference had 105 registered attendees from the US, Canada, UK, Brazil, China, Hong Kong, Morocco, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, Germany, Iraq, Israel, Brunei, Belgium, Finland, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Austria, and Qatar. [End Page 129] The conference received significant support from MSU's academic programs with co-sponsorship by the African Studies Center, the Asian Studies Center, the Citizen-Scholars Program, the Department of Forestry, the Department of Religious Studies, the Global Studies in the Arts and Humanities, the Honors College, James Madison College, and the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities. Jay Samek and David Skole, faculty members in the Department of Forestry at MSU who have worked on forestry projects with colleagues in Indonesia since 2016, proposed the conference idea to the Muslim Studies Program. Samek has been involved in a partnership with the University of Palangka Raya and Muhammadiyah University of Palangka Raya that deals with forest restoration and climate change. Professor Skole's research looks at "the relationship between forests, land use change, the global carbon cycle and climate change." The conference addressed general issues at the intersection of Islamic religious traditions and environmental science to better understand the convergence of the theological and material foundations of Muslim ecological practices and the emerging academic approaches to climate-change being developed by scholars studying Islam. This conference highlighted an area of research in the field of Muslim and Islamic Studies that does not receive enough attention, but it can contribute crucially to addressing environmental concerns effecting all communities across the globe. The dialogue was enriched by the interdisciplinary character of the program, which included scholars from the fields of Islamic studies, medicine, religious studies, philosophy, forestry, political science, languages, history, anthropology, and geography. October 15, 2020: Welcoming Remarks, Session 1 and Session 2 Professor Mohammad Khalil (Michigan State University) opened the conference by welcoming all participants and attendees. He noted the extensive participation of scholars from around the world and the large number of attendees who had registered for the virtual event. Professor Khalil then introduced Steven D. Hanson, Associate Provost and Dean of International Studies and Programs at MSU. Dean Hanson emphasized the important work of the Muslim Studies Program, which has enhanced the stature of MSU in international studies. He also noted the thematic strengths, regional expertise and global partnerships of the conference. He concluded by highlighting the exemplary nature of the conference, which has the potential to generate solutions beyond the academy and have influence on environmental policy and on communities facing ecological crises. Session 1: "Islam and Environmental Activism-Part I: Looking to the Sources" included presentations by Natana Delong-Bas (Boston College), [End Page 130] Abdalmajid Katranji (Michigan State University), Sarra Tlili (University of Florida), and Sami al-Daghistani (Columbia University; Brooklyn Institute for Social Research; Center for Advanced Study of Religion in Oslo, Norway). Delong-Bas's paper on "Intertextual Scriptural Reading as Inspiration for Interfaith Cooperation in Water Conservation and Management" analyzed references to water in the Qur'an and Bible, showing how water figures in religious texts as "God's gift...

The Studies of Islamic Areas by European and American Academic Society — Centered on Mainland (50 Years After the Founding of New China)
  • Jan 1, 2021
  • History Research
  • Alimu Tuoehti

The studies of Chinese Islam by worldwide academic society are consisted of two schools, “western” and “Japanese”. I will focus my research “The studies of Chinese Islam by European and American Academic Society”. In this paper, mainly related to the research situation since the second half of the 20th century. Academic research in the second half of the 20th century can be divided into two periods: before and after the 1980s. The characteristics of the two periods are very different Research after 1949 was at a low ebb as Westerners withdrew from China. Regardless of whether they were missionaries or Orientalists, they were no longer permitted to conduct research in mainland China. Given the geopolitical impact of the Cold War, Western research on Chinese Islam inevitably declined. Furthermore, after the Second World War, with the independence of colonial countries, Western disciplines, such as Orientalism and anthropology, gradually lost their traditional prestige. This trend persisted until at least the 1960s, when structuralist anthropology characterized by theoretical construction emerged. In the field of Islamic Studies in China, the same shift took place and Islam in China began to be looked at from the perspective of sociology and anthropology. One of the main characteristics is that, during this period, research was mainly conducted into literature and a number of bibliographical studies were published (as other avenues of research were curtailed). Since the 1970s, and the new opportunities offered by the “Reform and opening-up”, Raphael Israeli’s works on Chinese Muslims have been published continuously, and have greatly influenced Western academia. In addition to several monographs, he has published more than 20 papers on Chinese Muslims and Islam. Since the 1980s, with the change in China’s national policy, Western scholars have once again been able to carry out fieldwork in mainland China. From the 1990s, with the continuous expansion and exchange of academic research between China and the international community, Western study of Islam in China has entered a new stage. Theoretical improvements in research and practical investigation have allowed significant progress, and disciplines and research paradigms in this period have become more diversified. Traditional historical research has combined with anthropology, political science, gender research, and other disciplines.

  • Jurnal Pendidikan Islam
  • Shella Monica + 1 more

Although there have been studies on the ways writers argue for the importance of their work in their journal article abstracts, such studies on journal article abstracts in the field of Islamic studies have never been conducted. This is important because authors from different fields use different rhetorical styles and linguistic features in their journal articles, such as in their abstracts. The purpose of this study is to look into the argument strategy used in journal article abstracts that are published in local and refereed journals in the field of Islamic studies. For this study, 60 abstracts (i.e., 20 from Indonesian-based journals, 20 from Indonesian-based refereed journals, and 20 from international refereed journals) in Islamic studies were selected and analyzed. The findings indicate that, in terms of abstract length, the three groups of articles are not significantly different; however, in terms of the appearance of Move 1 (introduction, background, or setting) and article justification argument types, they are different. The articles published in the two groups of reputable journals (Indonesian-based and International Refereed Journals) are similar but different from those in Indonesian-based journals. This implies that local journal authors should modify their rhetorical and argumentative styles in their abstracts to match those found in reputable journals, thereby improving the quality of the abstracts.

  • Hamid Fahmy Zarkasyi

This article is aimed at elaborating the challenge of Islamic studies in the universities of contemporary Muslim worlds and its proposed solution. This delves at the outset the Muslim intellectual tradition in the past where Muslim established their own discipline of knowledge and subsequently assimilated some concepts and theories from other civilizations. However, unlike Muslim intellectual in the past, the contemporary Muslims intellectual adopted different concepts, theories and approaches in the field of Islamic studies and modern sciences from foreign civilization without prior process of assimilation. As a result, Muslim minds are confused whether they have to employ foreign concepts and theories or hold the concepts and theories from Islamic intellectual tradition. In this predicament the researcher proposed two steps: first is that Muslims intellectual in the Islamic universities should develop Islamic studies in response to the contemporary challenge by re-conceptualizing key concepts of various field of Islamic studies. Second, Muslim intellectual should work on the process of assimilation or Islamization of modern sciences by criticizing, selecting, adapting, remolding and refining foreign concepts incompatible with Islam to form Muslim own discipline of knowledge.

This corpus-based lexical study aimed to explore the use of words in Coxhead (2000) Academic Word List (AWL) in academic journal articles in the field of Islamic studies. Around 472,621 word corpus, called the Islamic Academic Research Articles (IARA) corpus, was created for this study. The corpus consisted of 66 research articles written in English that were published in more than 10 different Islamic academic journals. Authentic and academic research articles written on Islam, and from Islamic perspectives, covering a wide range of topics, were selected. The study found that the most frequent 317 AWL words which occurred in the IARA corpus was only 56% of Coxhead’s AWL of 570 words. This finding points to the need for a special AWL for students. Findings suggest the need to produce field-specific academic word lists incorporating all frequent academic lexical items necessary for the expression of the rhetoric of the specific research area. Findings also revealed that some of the words which were found in the present study were not found in Coxhead’s Academic Word List. This suggests that vocabulary needs of students in Islamic studies are characteristically different from those of students in other disciplines.

The teaching and learning process of the Arabic language among students is a global concern, particularly in the field of Islamic Studies at the university level. Arabic has played a crucial role as the language of knowledge and serves as the medium of instruction in the academic domain of Islamic Studies. Several constraints are encountered during the teaching and learning process, including students’ inability to communicate in Arabic, limited vocabulary, and fear of making errors in speech. These constraints have posed significant challenges for UniSHAMS lecturers. Therefore, this study was conducted to explore effective teaching and learning strategies to enhance Arabic language proficiency among Diploma in Islamic Studies students at UniSHAMS. Utilizing a qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with subject matter experts and analysed thematically. The findings reveal that interactive strategies such as conversational practice, real-life situation simulations, group assignments and language games significantly contribute to improving students’ language skills. Additionally, the integration of technology, including language learning applications (e.g., Duolingo, Babbel) and social media platforms, was identified as a crucial factor in fostering engagement and motivation. The study highlights that a combination of interactive and technological approaches not only enhances comprehension and communication skills but also cultivates a deeper interest in mastering Arabic. The implications of this study suggest the need for diverse and dynamic teaching methods to ensure effective learning outcomes. Recommendations for future research include exploring quantitative methods to assess the long-term impact of these strategies.

One form of scholarly writing is an article that is published by a journal. Accordingly, the education arena in Malaysia is also actively publishing quality scientific journals; as of 2020, there are over 500 journals that have been published in Malaysia and are listed in the MyJurnal database, with 107 journals themed writing in the field of Islamic studies. As such, this study aims to identify the themes and styles of reference writing that are set by the publishers of journals in the field of Islamic studies. Through a qualitative research methodology that is based on the content analysis approach, the results of the study had found that there are five main themes for the journals, namely, the field of Islamic studies in general, the field of Sharia, the field of al-Quran and hadith, the field of faith and thought, and the field of Islamic history. In addition, 94 journals (87.85%) have used the American Psychological Association (APA) reference style, while the remaining 13 journals (12.14%) have applied The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) style. Therefore, this disclosure can help the authors in the preparation and writing of article manuscripts. The selection of themes and adherence to the format that are outlined by the publisher is the main criteria for the acceptance of an article to be published in a scientific journal.
