Abstract

Objectives The purpose of this study was to develop a college life adjustment scale based on the stress-vulnerability model, focusing on the students of Y university.
Methods Based on the theoretical background of the model, this scale was composed of three dimensions: college life stress, psychological coping resources, and mental health, and a preliminary scale was developed with questions for each dimension and sub-factors based on previous research. The developed preliminary scale was conducted on 382 college students, and the final questions were selected through factor analysis. A main survey was conducted on 539 college students for the selected final questions, and the validity, criterion validity, and reliability of the factor structure were confirmed.
Results As a result of the exploratory factor analysis, 4 sub-factors were derived for the college life stress area, 5 psychological coping resource areas, and 4 mental health areas. As a result of the confirmatory factor analysis, it was found that the factor structure of the modified model, which assumes the correlation between error terms in all three areas, explained the data reasonably. In addition, the mental health area of this scale showed a significant positive correlation with BSI-18. As a result of checking the internal consistency of the items, the reliability of sub-factors of all areas except avoidance coping in the psychological coping resource area was significant.
Conclusions The above results show that the scale newly developed in this study reliably and reasonably measures college life stress, psychological coping resources, and mental health of college students.
