The essence of the concept of sociocultural competence has been considered in the article, its structure has been discovered and the main components have been characterized. Based on the analysis of scientific works, a definition of the concept of sociocultural competence has been presented, which is interpreted as a qualitative characteristic of a personality based on the totality of the acquired knowledge of the social and cultural spheres of life, its value orientations. The views of domestic scientists on the essence and structure of sociocultural competence have been analysed. It has been noted that sociocultural competence is considered by scientists as a component of communicative competence, which is closely interconnected with such components of the structure as social and general cultural. The necessity for teachers to use local history and linguistic studies in order to research the historical past of their native village or city, the origin of its name, famous compatriots and the like has been stressed. The article focuses on the appropriateness of choosing topics related to the native area for constructing coherent statements. The importance of working at the lessons of the Ukrainian language at local dialects, the encouragement of children to use them during oral communication with fellow countrymen has been emphasized. The importance of inviting children to compare traditional rules of family behaviour with modern changes in family relations, encouraging them to maintain good and wise traditions and customs in modern Ukrainian families has been emphasized. It has been discovered that the general cultural component of the sociocultural competence of a younger schoolchild implies possession of knowledge about the features of the Ukrainian national culture, customs, traditions, holidays and the use of this knowledge in speech practice, the use of the most famous small Ukrainian folklore forms in one’s own speech; the formation of moral and ethical qualities. One of the effective ways of forming sociocultural competence is the search and creative activity of younger schoolchildren, which can be implemented by introducing into the educational process of primary school a system of reproductive tasks of an analytical and synthetic nature.
