Abstract

Objectives: The effect of gender on the word-usage is controversial. Accordingly, this study looks at the difference of verbs-usage through semantic categories in the spontaneous speech of children. Method: Speech data were collected from 64 children, age 2 to 5, without speech and language delays. And data were selected as 300 representative utterances for analysis. The verbs were divided into semantic categories based on Halliday(2004); categorized as material, mental, relational, existential, behavioral or verbal verbs(processes). We examined the number of different verb types and the frequency of their usage according to gender. Results: The results of the study are as follows: Girls showed a significant difference in frequency of use, but not verb types. Girls used more relational and behavioral verb types than boys. Conclusion: Speech language pathologists or special teacher can consult the verb type and frequency when they prioritize verbs to teach children according to gender.
