Abstract

Spike Jonze’s movie, her, portrays the changed life style of human being in the era of science and technology, being based on digital technology transformation. Even though a large number of people expect that the future society in the 4th Industrial Revolution will provide modern people with comfortable conditions for human existence, many in a highly digitalized environment ironically and easily recognizes the sense of emptiness and the unreal state of mind facing the situation of total isolation from the surroundings. Jonze’s her describes the vulnerability of a man’s emotion in spite of living in a highly industrialized society. Theodore is the protagonist of the movie and falls in love with Samantha, an incorporeal system of artificial intelligence. Frequently, previous researches on the movie have mainly focused on the argument if the love between Theodore and Samantha is unreal or real in the perspectives of philosophy and post-humanism. Apparently, the movie does not directly deal with the issues of religion and philosophy. However, the important significance of the movie lies in the fact that it reveals the protagonist’s religious and philosophical reflection on the essence of human existence and the real meaning of life. Theodore realizes the vulnerability of comfort from the materialized world, and quests for the real value of life. Jonze’s her successfully illustrates Theodore’s aspiration for the world beyond the world which intrinsically fulfills human life with real happiness.
