Abstract

This study examines the control performance of a photoelectric dimming control system applied to an office space with a curtain wall structure. The space was divided into 9 zones for lighting controls. Two zone facing north (zone 2) and south (zone 8) were used for analyses using computer simulations under a variety of daylight conditions. Results indicate that the dimming control system failed to provide necessary target illuminance under all blind conditions in zone 2 due to excessive dimming from lighting fixtures. In zone 8, the control system overshot the target illuminance for the majority of daylight conditions. Noblind condition in March was the best condition to keep optimum dimming levels with lighting energy savings of 78.2%. Energy savings in zone 8 ranged from 28.7% to 78.2%. Strong correlation existed between the desktop and photosensor illuminance levels by daylight. The correlation did not always show particular patterns according to the direction of window.
