Abstract

A methodical approach and results of estimating the seismotectonic potential of the region (the maximum possible earthquake magnitude Mmax) based on geomagnetic data are presented – the value of the geomagnetic Z-component in the geocentric solar magnetospheric coordinate system (ZGSM), which can be calculated using the international reference model of the main geomagnetic field IGRF. The expediency of applying such an approach to assessing the seismotectonic potential in areas with weakened seismicity, which may currently be in the long-term seismic quiescence, is shown. This may be especially appropriate when assessing the seismic potential in the case of location of critical strategic structures and other environmentally hazardous facilities in such territories.
