Abstract

Neuroarchitecture explores the physiological and neurological effects of architectural space on humans for application to space design to ensure health and well-being based on human emotional and aesthetic experiences. This study aims to identify, based on neuroarchitecture, the emotional design of educational facilities that can positively affect students emotionally. Emotional design indicators include 20 items derived from elements of the healing environment and biophilic design and architectural design elements related to the positive emotions of users, classified under three design factors: restorativeness, stress reduction, and aesthetics and pleasure. The applicability of design indicators was assessed for the 30 best designs of common spaces of high schools in foreign countries, finding that the design indicators of the aesthetics and pleasure factor was highly applicable, but the restorativeness and stress reduction factors were less applicable. Therefore, it is necessary to supplement these design indicators. The design characteristics identified were “spatial form” as an open type with a void or atrium and “natural elements” as applying through windows with natural light and outdoor views. “Light” consists of being equipped with standard illuminance and “color” is monotone. This design strategy will ultimately support the emotional health of students, thereby facilitating learning efficiency and contributing to the well-being of school life.
