Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship structure between academic-athletic orientation, self-efficacy, and the level of career decision-making in college student-athletes. The study aimed to identify the role of the influence of the variables, and to prepare strategies for high-quality performances in both academics and athletics simultaneously and for career support for student-athletes in colleges.BR Method: A survey was conducted both online and offline utilizing a purposive sampling method, and a total of 325 responses were collected from student athletes in 13 sports from universities in the capital area, Chungcheong-do, Gangwon-do, and Gyeongsang-do. Of these, 312 final effective samples were analyzed using frequency analysis, correlation analysis, exploratory factor analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis and path analysis of structural equation modeling.BR Results: The major results of this study are as follows. First, both the academic and athletic orientations of student-athletes had a significant effect on their self-efficacy. Second, the academic orientation, athletic orientation, and self-efficacy of student-athletes did not affect their level of career decision-making.BR Conclusion: Through these research results, the causal relationship of the structural model designed based on the hypotheses was confirmed, the necessity of improving the balance of academics-athletics and enhancing career competency were identified, and related strategies were discussed.
