Context and relevance. The deterioration of the global environmental situation and the growing concern of the community have led to the need to change the daily economic behavior of people. Among the psychological variables that influence the choice of pro-environmental consumer behavior time perspective, or psychological time, is noted. This phenomenon is poorly understood in relation to environmentally responsible behavior that is why the objective of this study is to identify the association between psychological time and environmentally responsible purchasing behavior of young people. Methods and materials. To study the level of environmental purchasing behavior, the “Green scale” (Haws, Winterich, Naylor) specially adapted for the Russian sample was used. To study the cognitive component of psychological time Temporal Focus Scale (Shipp, Edwards, Lamber) was used, affective component was diagnosed using Attitudes toward time by Nuttin. Results. The results of the comparative analysis (N = 223) show the tendency of increasing focus on past events and thinking about the future of students with a higher level of environmentally responsible purchasing behavior. The value of environmental consumption increases with an assessment of the past as more meaningful, hopeful, speedy and more difficult. The results of the discriminant analysis allowed to identify two factors that affects the preference of “green” purchases of young people — past attitude and past focus. Students who are more likely to turn to their own experience and see the past in more positive colors, tend to think about not harming nature, save the resources of the planet when planning purchases. Conclusions. The study broadens the understanding of time predicators of pro-environmental behavior, allowing us to see the role of personal experience and economic socialization.

The study aims to measure tourists’ responsible behavior, and to develop a structural equation model of responsible tourist behavior among Thai tourists. A questionnaire survey was conducted using an online questionnaire. A total of 503 Thai domestic tourists who practiced responsible behavior participated in the study. The data were analyzed through structural equation modeling with a two-stage approach. The results of the analysis revealed a good fit with the empirical data (CMIN/DF = 2.62, RMSEA = 0.06, CFI = 0.94, TLI = 0.92). Moreover, the findings highlight two underlying factors which emerged for responsible behavior, namely impact consideration and local connections. The establishment of an extended Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) model with two additional predictors including environmental and social concern, and pro-environmental behavior in everyday life, explains the formation of tourists’ responsible behavior. Destination managers and marketers can encourage tourists’ responsible behavior by implementing meaningful experiences with various low-impact tourism activities. Relevant government agencies and policy makers can promote responsible campaigns and events to enhance responsible behavior.

Should We Hope About Climate Change? The Power of Hope for Engaging in Pro-environmental Behaviors: An Abstract
 • Nov 18, 2017
 • Maria Lagomarsino + 1 more

“Demain” is a French documentary film launched in 2015 by Melanie Laurent and Cyril Dion which presents many feel-good stories of people that are taking concrete actions to combat the ecological crisis. In contrast to most environmental campaigns, the filmmakers decided to use positive emotions instead of negative emotions to encourage people to adopt behaviors in favor of the environment. Surprisingly, this innovative approach has received limited attention in the literature. This paper aims to fill this gap in investigating the role of hope about climate change (hope) on adoption of pro-environmental behaviors. Two studies looked at the distinct effect of feeling hope on the commitment of the population to a big range of pro-environmental behaviors. In the first study, we measured the level of hope of a sample of 202 Mechanical Turk respondents and evaluated its correlation with the level of pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors. We controlled for dispositional hope and optimism in order to have a clear picture of the main and isolated impact of hope. We found that hope was significantly, positively correlated to pro-environmental behaviors and attitude toward the environment. Dispositional hope did not impact this relationship, and optimism about climate change did not have any statistically significant correlation to pro-environmental behaviors. Knowledge regarding climate change influenced hope in such a way that an increase of knowledge was beneficial to hope until a certain level and detrimental after. In the second study (N = 229), to insure the causal effect of hope on pro-environmental behaviors, we used a writing task to manipulate the level of hope among respondents. The first group was asked to write down the reasons why we can be hopeful about climate change (hope condition; n = 70), the second the reasons why we cannot be hopeful (absence of hope condition; n = 78), and the third (control condition; n = 81) was asked to write down what they think about climate change. We then measured their intention to engage in various environmental behaviors in the next year. Results supported the outcomes of study 1. Hope was positively related to intention to engage in pro-environmental behaviors. To conclude, hope appeals should be used in awareness-raising campaigns to increase consumers’ engagement in pro-environmental behaviors and to reduce denial and counter effects of educative messages about climate change effects.

Background Climate change is one of the greatest global threats to humanity in the 21st century, and it is directly or indirectly caused by human activity. In view of the effects of climate change, it is important to examine the level of knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of the public. A better understanding of these variables should improve the current debate on the impact of human behavior on environment and health. Methods In a cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire, 704 students were asked about their knowledge, attitudes, and behavior related to climate change. The data were analyzed using correlations, independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and linear regression models. Results We found that students have a medium level of knowledge about the impact of climate change and that their attitudes are moderately pro-environmental, yet they are not strict about pro-environmental behavior. Students with higher levels of environmental knowledge demonstrated more pro-environmental attitudes and behavior, and attitudes mediate the relationship between level of knowledge and behavior. Women demonstrated more pro-environmental behavior than did men, and computer science and management students have the highest levels of knowledge, while health sciences students hold the most positive attitudes and more pro-environmental behavior. Conclusions Our results highlight the importance of raising awareness of the effects of climate change and increasing knowledge about how climate change can be mitigated. To this end, an introductory course on environmental science should be integrated into various academic study programs. Further research is needed in order to understand the factors associated with pro-environmental behavior and how to promote it. Key messages Environmental behavior is a function of knowledge, skills, and values. Nevertheless, gaps might exist between social and environmental values that a person aspires to believe in and his/her behavior. Preferring the present over the future is a classic sustainability problem, as intentional sustainable behavior necessitates long-term thinking and gives precedence to future benefits.

Environmental education is important in the face of the climate crisis. Although previous studies suggest that knowledge could boost pro-environmental attitudes, behavioural change is complex and may go beyond knowledge acquisition. Previous research highlighted biospheric and altruistic values as motivational factors related to pro- environmental behaviour (PEB). Video-based education has arisen as an accessible environmental learning medium. Video-sharing platforms offer accurate educational videos, although, it is unclear if they can increase knowledge, PEB or change attitudes. An online experiment randomly allocated 72 students in two conditions to watch an informational video on climate change, with one condition engaging in a values clarification task. Participants completed questionnaires on environmental attitudes, PEB, environmental self-efficacy and knowledge. Cross-correlations indicated complex inter-relationships and a non-significant relationship between knowledge and PEB at baseline. The values clarification task did not offer an advantage on PEB or pro-environmental attitudes. Both conditions experienced increases in knowledge, indicating that watching an educational video on climate change contributes to knowledge acquisition. The findings highlight complex mechanisms involved in increasing pro-environmental attitudes and behaviours. The study was part of the project “Be the Change: Innovative Higher Education for Environmental Sustainability,” co-funded by the ERASMUS+ Programme of the European Union (Project number: 2022-1-SE01- KA220-HED-000087275).

An accurate measurement of pro-environmental behaviour (PEB) plays an important role in research across various fields such as sustainability studies, environmental studies, and policy development. To date, there is lack of validated measurement to assess PEB among Malaysians. The objective of the present study is to investigate the validity and reliability of the Pro-Environmental Behaviour (PEB) Scale in Malaysia. Besides, the measurement invariance across age and gender were investigated. A total of 719 participants (mean age = 32.81, SD = 13.48) aged between 18 and 65 years were recruited via convenience sampling from social media. They completed an online questionnaire consisting of the PEB Scale, New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) Scale, and GREEN Scale. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that PEB Scale is a two-factor model with all 11 items retained. The two factors represent public and private PEB constructs. Additionally, results showed that PEB Scale has a good criterion validity with NEP Scale and good convergent validity with GREEN Scale. The PEB Scale also showed acceptable and good internal consistency. Measurement invariance results (configural, metric, scalar and residual) showed acceptable fit across emerging adults (18–29 years old) and older adults (30–65 years old), as well as genders (male vs. female), indicating a multiple group CFA was appropriate. In conclusion, the findings showed that the PEB Scale is a valid and reliable tool to measure PEB among Malaysians. In the future, the PEB Scale can be used in environmental research and policy development that involves emerging and older adults in Malaysia.

The Relative Role of Knowledge and Empathy in Predicting Pro-Environmental Attitudes and Behavior

 • Marina Ienna + 10 more

Planet Earth is undergoing unprecedented levels of environmental degradation and destruction at a global scale. Incentivizing people to adopt behaviors that are compatible with a sustainable future will help address the current ecological crisis. However, it is first necessary to understand the psychological drivers of pro-environmental behavior. Here, we examined whether greater levels of environmental knowledge and empathy predicted higher levels of pro-environmental behavior in an Australian population sample. We aimed to advance our understanding of the psychological variables that motivate people to act in pro-environmental ways, while also advancing the ongoing debate amongst conservation scientists regarding the relative importance of fostering empathy. Correlational analyses revealed that objective, verifiable knowledge was a strong predictor of pro-environmental attitudes and behavior. Empathy also correlated positively with pro-environmental attitudes and behavior, but with a dissociation with respect to its cognitive and affective components. Multivariate analyses revealed that knowledge was a stronger predictor of both pro-environmental attitudes and behavior after controlling for individual variation in cognitive and affective empathy. This finding casts doubt on the claim by compassionate conservationists that fostering empathy is the key to solving the current environmental conservation crisis. Future research should aim to extend the present findings by testing whether a more exhaustive test of participants’ environmental knowledge and other measures of empathy, including empathic competencies and the recently developed Emotional and Cognitive Scale of the Human–Nature Relationship (ECS-HNR), yield the same dominance of knowledge over empathy.

The ABC connectedness to nature scale: development and validation of a scale with an approach to affective, behavioural, and cognitive aspects
 • Aug 9, 2022

 • Esther Cuadrado + 3 more

Connectedness to nature influences the well-being and health of individuals, communities, and the planet. Although many validated scales exist, none includes the three fundamental aspects of any attitude: the affective, behavioural, and cognitive components. The study’s main objective was to develop and validate an integral tool, the ABC Connectedness to Nature Scale (ABC-CNS), which would enable the measurement of the affective, behavioural, and cognitive aspects of this construct. The questionnaire was administered to 1,375 students (878 Ecuadorian and 497 Spanish). Exploratory factor analysis retained the three expected factors. Confirmatory factor analyses confirmed a robust adjustment for the tridimensional structure, but cross-cultural invariance was not attained: Although the ABC-CNS is valid for both Ecuador and Spain, the scores cannot be compared in both cultural contexts analysed. The pattern of relations with other psychological variables (proenvironmental values, appreciation and preservation of nature, and individual and classmates’ proenvironmental behaviours) provided evidence of the structure and construct validity. The ABC-CNS scale is an integral, reliable, and short tool to measure connectedness to nature through the proposed dimensions. The tool is suitable for environmental professionals and researchers to assess individuals’ connectedness to nature, a psychological variable that may affect a person’s mental health and proenvironmental behaviour.

Currently, the world is facing an exceptionally alarming scale of environmental problems involving phenomena such as climate change, ozone layer depletion and global warming. The affected world urgently requires an immediate way out to counter these environmental problems. Evidences show that environmentalproblems occurrencesare mainly due to irresponsible human activities. As part of overcoming these problems, behavioural solutions areneeded to make individuals friendly to the environment. As university students ‘populationrepresents huge users of large environmental resources, universities can play a major role in endorsing environmentally friendly behavior in society through proper environmental education to their students. However, information on the students’ pro-environmental behaviour is lacking in local universities such as in UniversitiTeknologi MARA (UiTM). Recent studies have found pro-environmental behavior can be explained by many direct factors, however, indirect factors have received far less attention. This study aims to (1) determine specific Environmental Factors that may affect Environmental Behavioural Intention among UiTM students and to (2) determine the mediation effect of Environmental Attitude on the relationship between Environmental Factors and Environmental Behavioural Intention. These Environmental Factors and mediation factors are analyzed using Partial Least Square - Structural Equations Modelling (PLS-SEM). Self-administered questionnaires were distributed among a sample of 382 UiTM students, selected using Stratified random sampling. The results indicate that two significant factors directly affect Environmental Behavioural Intention i.e. Environmental Knowledge and Social Norms. This implies that students with environmental knowledge and are surrounded by pro-environmental persons tend to have responsible environmental behaviour. Meanwhile, another two other factors i.e. Environmental Concern and Perceived Risk were found to be indirectly influencing Environmental Behavioural Intention through the mediation of Environmental Attitude. The finding indicates that students who are concerned about the environment and aware of the environmental risk related will behave in a responsible environmental manner if and only if the students have a positive attitude. Overall, integrating both types of direct and indirect factors to explain pro-environmental behaviour gives abetter understanding of the student’s attitude and behaviour towards the environment.

 • Jinming Wang + 7 more

Environmental challenges like resource depletion, climate change, and biodiversity loss require human action. Environmental education influences individuals’ understanding and motivates responsible behavior, making it a real solution to address current problems. In this study, we examine the impact of situational environmental education and daily environmental education on tourists’ responsible environmental behavior by incorporating them as covariates into an integrated tourist behavior model. In total, 2381 valid questionnaires were obtained. The results showed that (1) daily environmental education mainly affects tourists’ responsible environmental behavior through attitude (0.467) and habits (0.634); (2) tourists’ responsible environmental behavior is mainly affected by situational environmental education through habits (0.534), subjective norms (0.504), and intention (0.614); and (3) personal factors, including attitudes toward environmental behavior, subjective norms, and perceptual behavior control, positively influence tourists’ responsible environmental behavioral intention and their responsible environmental behavior. This research will help to improve sustainability indicators and frameworks and to promote the adoption of sustainable tourism practices.

Towards sustainable consumption: Factors influencing energy-efficient appliance adoption in haze-affected environments
 • May 1, 2024
 • Energy Strategy Reviews
 • Yinuo Jia + 4 more

Global-scale energy use has contributed to worldwide environmental issues, including climate change, global warming, and air and haze pollution. Home appliances are commonly used products that consume a lot of energy. This study aims to empirically assess the factors that lead to pro-environmental consumer behavior in households under the influence of haze pollution. The relationship among the variables of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) (attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, purchase intention, and purchase behavior), the norm activation model (NAM) (ascription of responsibility, awareness of consequences, personal norms), and additional psychological variables such as green trust and environmental concern has been examined. In addition, the moderating role of herd mentality on consumer purchasing has also been assessed. A non-probability-based purposive sampling technique has been employed to gather data from 429 respondents. The results from PLS-SEM show that haze pollution stimulates the usage of energy-saving appliances. Environmental concern positively affects consumers' intentions to purchase energy-efficient household appliances, and green trust positively influences environmental concern. Subjective norms, attitudes, perceived consumer effectiveness, and environmental concern shape purchase intention. Personal norms are influenced by the awareness of consequences and the ascription of responsibility. The influence of these factors on consumers' pro-environmental behavior is evident in purchasing energy-efficient household appliances to minimize haze and mitigate associated environmental issues. This study proposes strategies to persuade individuals to purchase energy-efficient household equipment based on the empirical findings.

Determinants of generation Z pro-environmental travel behaviour: the moderating role of green consumption values
 • Jun 27, 2023
 • Journal of Sustainable Tourism
 • Manuel Alector Ribeiro + 4 more

Generation Z (Gen Z) is widely considered the most eco-conscious generation. Nonetheless, there is a dearth of empirical research on this generation’s pro-environmental travel behaviour. To address this gap, the present research aims to investigate the interplay of values (egoistic, biospheric, altruistic) and ascribed responsibility in driving the pro-environmental travel behaviour of Gen Z through the moderating role of green consumption values. Data were collected from 362 British Gen Z tourists using a structured questionnaire and analysed using SmartPLS. Results revealed that values and ascribed responsibility significantly influence environmental concern, which, in turn, affects attitudes, willingness to sacrifice, and pro-environmental travel behaviour. Furthermore, positive attitudes and willingness to sacrifice significantly affect pro-environmental travel behaviour. In addition, green consumption values moderate the relationship between attitude and willingness to sacrifice concerning pro-environmental travel behaviour. Applying a generational approach, this study enriches the theoretical understanding of tourists’ pro-environmental behaviour and highlights effective ways to promote sustainable behaviour among younger travellers.
