Abstract

During the 9th – 10th centuries, a large group of archaeological sites are discovered in the region. Their materials correlate with the antiquities of the Romenskaya culture. Weaponry items originating from them can be divided into three groups: items of Eastern European, Northern European and Steppe cultural circle. Most of the finds of weapons and horse equipment of the steppe cultural circle dated the 9th – 10th centuries discovered in the Oka-Don watershed come from settlements. These are the hillforts of Petrovskoye, Supruty, Fedyashevo, Spitsino, “Chertovo Gorodishche”, as well as the settlements of Berezovka-4, Slobodka-1, Torkhovo-3, Ustye-2, Utkino-1. A number of items represent finds outside the context of the archaeological sites. No burial sites of this time containing items of military culture have been found in the region so far. Arrowheads, axes, quiver parts, armour rings as well as a spearhead and a dagger fragment were found. Horse harnesses include metal reins, stirrups and bridle fittings. Most of the finds come from sites from the early Slavic antiquities in the region. The finds are limited to the 9 community. Among the mass of steppe antiquities from the region, there is a group of objects from the Hungarian cultural group standing out clearly. These items come from the final complexes of the early period and from sites of the middle period (mid and second half of the 10th century).
