Abstract

This paper proposes a new date for the deposition of the hoards of 1973 and 2001. It is based on analysis of the forms of the containers in which they were found. The date is not earlier than the late 10th or early 11th century. Through comparison of the results of this analysis with the typological and chronological scale already developed by the author for the pottery of North-Western Rus’, the conclusion is drawn on the general tendencies in the evolution of the complex of early wheelmade pottery of Gnezdovo and other old urban centres of North-Western Rus’ over the 10th — first half of the 11th century. These results suggest that some corrections must be introduced in the historical and social scheme of the Gnezdovo centre. The author believes it important to highlight, on this example, once more the necessity of the employment of dating possibilities of the early wheelmade pottery.
