Abstract

The study aims to define specific techniques of reformatting the text about a love story from “Conversations of German Refugees” (1795) by a representative of the classic German literature J. W. von Goethe into the text of the symbolist short story “An Episode in the Life of Marshal de Bassompierre” (1900) by a prominent Austrian writer of the Viennese modernism H. von Hofmannsthal. Scientific novelty of the research lies in studying strong appeal of Goethe’s prose that a century later becomes a basis of intertextual transformation for the Viennese symbolist writer. In addition to that, principles of romanticization and symbolisation in Hofmannsthal’s short story have not been studied in the Russian literary criticism before. As a result, it was proved that there is considerable semantic development of figurative characteristics of the heroes in Hofmannsthal’s short story “An Episode in the Life of Marshal de Bassompierre”, as well as introduction of symbols and other figures of speech, which can be defined as symbolist.
