Abstract
The research aims to provide insight into the phenomenon of compensatory competence. The paper considers the requirements for compensatory competence formation in students at each level of foreign language proficiency. Scientific novelty of the research lies in specifying compensatory skills: the paraphrasing skill and the skill of using word building patterns. The research findings are as follows: the notion of “compensatory competence” has been interpreted; the requirements for compensatory competence formation in students at each level of foreign language proficiency have been presented; the skills of paraphrasing and using word building patterns have been clarified; it has been found that the skills of paraphrasing and using word building patterns determine compensatory competence acquisition at each level of foreign language proficiency.
